Kaotic Hair Dye

“You know something Nacho? Today I woke with an urge to do something crazy.” Nacho lifted his head and gave me a puzzled look. “I’m going to dye my hair.” Nacho ran up to me and tugged on my pant leg. “I know it’s a crazy idea but I need a change so bad.” I decided to get dressed, I had a meeting with the boys. We are gearing up for the Vegas Residency.

I got in my car and got to the meeting.

“Hey Nick! What up buddy?” Brian greeted me. The rest of the guys greeted me too.

“We’re just waiting for Kevin. He called to tell us he’s stuck in traffic.”

“Anything new? You’re acting different.” AJ asked me.

“Nah just thinking.”

“About?”

“Dying my hair.”

“Oh that’s cool.”

“Sorry I’m late guys.” Kevin finally showed up.

“No worries. You’re only 10 minutes late.”

“Oh good”

“So we are here to make the final decisions on the Residency.” Our tour manager commenced the meeting.

“I honestly like it the way it’s set up at the moment.” Brian said.

“Me too. I don’t see the need to make any changes to the plan.” Kevin agreed.

“You guys also OK with it?” Howie, AJ and I agreed also.

“Ok then. It’s settled.” He signed off. “Gosh, you guys are my favorite clients. Ya’ll are not demanding.” I grinned at that comment because I know how much of a diva I can be.

Everybody got ready to go.

“So Nicky, what are you doing today?”

“Going to get my hair done. Then I’m going to meet up with my brother for his concert.”

“Sounds like a good day. Maybe we can hang tomorrow.”

“Yeah no problem, Bone.” I went straight to the hair salon. There I was greeted by Armando. He walked me over to his chair.

“Good Morning, Mr. Carter. Are you wanting the usual?”

“No. I want to go dark today.” He looked at me like I was insane.

“Mr. Carter, are you sure about this?”

“Yes. I need a change.”

“OK, if you’re sure. What color were you thinking about?”

“I was thinking Elvis Black.”

“Mr. Carter, I must warn you that dying it that color, it will be hard to get it out without damaging your hair.”

“It’s ok. I’ll risk it.”

“But Mr. Carter…” He was getting on my nerve.

“Just do it.”

“OK.” Armando mixed everything together and began the process.

I sat in the chair for an hour and forty five minutes. He finally washed my hair then towel dried it. I looked in the mirror. I was a different person.
“I love it, Armando.” He seemed to be really sad.

“I’m glad you do, Mr. Carter.” I left there very satisfied with my new look. I couldn’t believe that making such a small change could make such a big difference.

I met up with my brother for some pre-show shopping. I know that it was early in the afternoon but I didn’t see my brother that often. So it was nice to be able to hang out with him.

When he saw me, he about had a heart attack.
“What have you done?”

“I woke up with a need for the spontaneity. So I did this.”

“Dude, you are gonna get so much shit from the fans. Honestly though, I like it. Now they can tell us apart.”

“They always did, because I’m the good looking one.” I elbowed him in the ribs. He slightly lost his balance. He then pushed me. It was like old times.

We shopped for some kicks. We then headed out to have an early dinner. We had to get back to the venue by 3. We were spotted by several fans.

“Nick, Nick can we get a picture with you?” I posed for some photos. They had Aaron join for some too. “So what made you dye your hair?”

“I was looking for a change.”

“Why didn’t you get another huge tattoo?” Asked the other girl.

“It wouldn’t have made a difference.”

“Well, I don’t like it. It changes everything in the group.”

“What do you mean?”

“Well Nick, you are know as the blonde one. You are no longer the blonde one. So that changes the group dynamic.” I looked at Aaron. He shrugged his shoulders telling me, ‘I told you so’

“Well Nick we better head out.”

“Ok Aaron.” I hugged the fans and we made our way to the venue and as soon as we arrived, reports of my new hair look were all over the internet. “Sheesh, they don’t waste time.”

“I can see that.”

“One of the guys will be calling soon for sure.”

“Yep and they aren’t gonna be happy at all.”

“Oh well. It’s done already.”

“That’s not it. Nicky you should’ve talked to them about it first.”

“For what? So they could talk me out of it?!”

“Probably not.”

“Yeah whatever. Brian has become such a judgemental prick. And it all started when we had that fight about his voice.”

“I understand.” And sure enough, my phone rang but it wasn’t the expected people. It was our manager.

“Nickaay, what are you up to?”

“Nothing. Just chilling with my brother.”

“Having a good time?”

“Yeah. It’s like old times.”

“Good. Soooo you know why I’m calling you right?”

“I could imagine it’s about my hair.”

“Yes. Look, I support you guys in everything you do. But this is not a good idea!”

“And why not?!?!?! AJ dyes his hair all sorts of different colors.”

“Yes but that’s expected of him. That’s part of his persona. Your persona in the group is the blonde one. So in the long run this change could affect sales. Fans aren’t going to be happy.”

“That’s too bad. I’m being myself. They will get use to it. And if they can’t accept me for me, then they are not my fans.”

“So you mean to tell me that this change is permanent?”

“Yes”

“Nick, you’re killing me here.”

“Why?”

“For one, the damage control I have to do…”

“That’s what you get paid for.”

THIS IS MADNESS! You’re being impossible.”

“No. That’s not it. I finally do something different for me and this the grief I get. Did it ever occur to you that I’m tired of being the heartthrob, the blonde one? No you don’t get that I’m bored with my life. But instead of me saying I’m done with the boys, I dyed my hair.”

“You could just get a tattoo.”

“I have so many. There’s no point.”

“I’m just doing my job as your manager to make sure that you know the consequences of such drastic choices.”

“I appreciate it but this is up to me. Nobody can tell me what to do with my appearance. Not even my parents.”

“OK” We ended the conversation and I hung out backstage with Aaron till the show. I began getting phone calls from the rest of the boys. I talked to each of them. They all liked my change. They didn’t think it such a huge deal.

By the time the residency was completed, I got bored with my hair. One morning I woke up missing my blonde. So I went to see Armando.

“Hello, Mr. Carter, ready for a root touch?”

“No. I want to go back to blonde.” He looked at me funny.

“Um Ok.” Armando once again mixed all the chemicals for the blonde. Apparently Armando had snuck a semi permanent dye instead of a permanent. So it didn’t take long to bleach my hair or have so much damage to my hair. I was so happy to be back to my blonde.

The moment that he was done with my hair, I snapped a picture and posted it on my Instagram. I captioned it, ‘Back to blonde’.

“It didn’t take long for the fans to go crazy over it. Got the naysayers, saying that black hair looked better on me. And of course I had the fans that prefer my blonde.

I do have to say that this experience was definitely different. From now on, I’m sticking to my blonde persona. Just because it wasn’t worth the aggravation.
